Oh, Mister. |
A blog dedicated to discussing sexism in media, fandom, poetry, and the advancement of socialist propaganda. Basically, I just roll this way. |
transradical asked: You say that a man cannot be the victim of sexism. What about the sexism against men who are (or are percieved to be) feminine?
As I have already stated, “sexism” against men for perceived femininity or feminine acts has its roots in sexism against women. Men are criticized for being feminine because it means they are behaving “like a woman,” which is automatically considered to be a bad thing. Do you see where I’m going with this?
Basically, sexism is the institutional, societal and cultural discrimination against women, but yes, it does sometimes adversely effect men as well. Men are criticized if they behave “like women” because behaving like a woman is not culturally valued - it is considered, because of sexism, to be a negative (whereas, for example, being a “tomboy” is considered to be good or neutral, because behaving “like a boy/man” is culturally valued).
So yeah, sexism against men still doesn’t exist Sexism just sucks for everybody and nobody wants to see it because it doesn’t let them run around yelling “but what about the meeeen!?” at the expense of women.
