Oh, Mister. |
A blog dedicated to discussing sexism in media, fandom, poetry, and the advancement of socialist propaganda. Basically, I just roll this way. |
Anonymous asked: "It’s okay, you know, to like things that have sexist elements." So it's okay to be a hypocrite? You say it's not okay to ignore them, but I'm pretty sure that liking them regardless is hypocritical.
It isn’t hypocritical if you are aware of the sexist elements in the media you consume.
After all, I challenge anyone to find some form of media that isn’t in any way, shape, or form sexist; it simply does not exist. If I were to automatically dislike anything with any sexist elements in it, I would not be able to consume media at all - not music, not television, not movies, not books. Being a voracious reader, a lover of music, and a media hog, this is not a tolerable response for me.
I consider it reasonable to enjoy media with some sexist elements if one is prepared to call said media out on those elements and not merely ignore them. To ask the creators of such media not to include such elements in the future is also important, but I understand that most fans do not have the ability or the sheer courage to directly contact a show’s creators or showrunners about this sort of thing.
It is not hypocritical in any way. When there is media available that is not sexist (or racist, or homophobic, etc. etc.), I will gladly consume it. Until then, I don’t have a choice but to put up with what is available and find what I love despite its problematic elements — and then call out, complain and discuss those problematic elements.
Feminism isn’t about just ignoring problematic shit and never looking at it and hoping it goes away. It is an ongoing discourse that requires critical analysis of the media we consume and enjoy.
